UPLOADING YOUR FILES

What ftp information do I need to login?

To login to your ftp accounts you'll use the following information:

Servername: If the domain has propagated you can use your domain name for the ftp server. If it hasn't, you can use the server's main IP address. This information is contained within your welcome email.

Username: This is the same as your cPanel username for the account if you're accessing the main ftp account. If you're trying to access a sub-ftp account (an ftp account you created through cPanel), then the username will resemble an e-mail address. For sub-ftp accounts, you will need to use: username@yourdomain.com.

Password: This is either the password for your cPanel account if accessing your main account, or the password you set for the sub-ftp account if accessing a sub-ftp account.

Port: The port should default to 21, however if it doesn't, that's the port to use.

The public_html and www directories

When you login to a cPanel based hosting account via ftp for the first time, you'll probably end up noticing that the public_html and www directories have the same files in them and it will probably end up confusing you as to which one to use. The answer? Whichever one you like. We recommend using the public_html directory.

The www directory is not a directory at all, but in reality a symbolic link. It works somewhat like a sci-fi warp. You click on it and you're warped into the public_html directory. Depending on what you're accessing the files with, it may retain the www name as the directory you're in, or it may show the actual directory you're in (/public_html). Using either one will work the same way and you can even use the www when using paths in scripts if you like something that's shorter.

Creating an FTP account in cPanel

  1. In your cPanel, in the FTP section, click on "Manage Accounts".
  2. In the resulting Ftp Account Management screen, you'll see four "default" accounts. These you can not delete.
  3. Click on "Add Account".
  4. Enter a "Login" and "Password".
  5. Enter the directory name that you want this FTP account to have access to.
    1. If you enter just a "/", this FTP account will have access to your main public_html directory. We don't recommend this.
    2. The directory name that you entered will be created for you.
  6. You may delete the account by clicking on the "Delete" link.
    1. The actual directory will not be deleted, just the FTP account.
  7. You may change the password by clicking on the "Change Password" link.

Configuring your site in WS_FTP

  1. Click on "Sites" "Add to Sites".
  2. Give the site any descriptive name you wish.
  3. Browse to the folder you wish to create the site in, hilite it, click "OK" and "Next".
  4. Enter the Host Name or IP Address and click "Next".
    1. If your doamin has propogated you may enter ftp.yoursite.com where yoursite.com is replaced with your actual domain name.
    2. If DNS has yet to propogate, use your IP Address provided in your Welcome email.
  5. Enter your User ID and Password, and click "Next".
    1. You may wish to check the "Save Password" box so that WS_FTP remembers the next time you use the program.
  6. Automatic detect and Port 21 are fine, so click "Next".
  7. Unless you have a firewall, you can skip the next step, and click "Finish".
  8. CONGRATULATIONS! You've just configured your site in WS_FTP.

Transferring files in WS_FTP

  1. When you open WS_FTP, you're taken directly to the "Connect to Remote Host" window.
  2. Browse to the folder you created in the "configure" step above, hilite it and click the "Connect" button on the right.
    1. If you have speakers on your computer, you'll hear the sound when you've successfully connected.
  3. You should now see a screen similar to the one below:

    1. The left side (or left pane) is a view of the files on your computer or your Local System.
    2. The right side is a view of the files on your Website or Remote System.
  4. To transfer files between your local system and your remote system, first hilite the file by clicking on the file name once. Then click the appropriate green transfer arrow located between the right and left pane.
    1. The right arrow transfers files from the left side (your computer) to the right site (your Website) and visa versa.
  5. CONGRATULATIONS! You've just transferred your first file in WS_FTP.
